Enter into the realm of traditional Indian healing by experiencing Elakizhi (Ilakizhi) or Patrapotala Sweda, which is an excellent Ayurvedic treatment employing special warm, herbal leaf bundles. Today, this age-old therapy is administered to promote a deep sense of relaxation and the numerous restorative benefits that are believed to come with it which is why massage has been embraced as one of Ayurveda’s most notable healers.

What is Elakizhi (Ilakizhi) or Patrapotala Sweda?

Kizhi means bolus or bundle, so in the therapy of Elakizhi kottam a Potli ( Kizhi) i.e. containing fresh & dried leaves/herbs is used for massaging purposes. The herbs are tied into a pouch and massaged over the body after heating. The heat produced by the Potli also gets absorbed to a great depth in every muscle & tissue contributing towards pain relief, stiffness, and fatigue but as an extension promoting detoxification up to the Wellness of being.

The Elakiazhi (Ilakizhi) Method

1. Herb Selection

Ailments are treated with the help of selected herbs and leaves that go by patient needs as well as disorder requirements. Some of the commonly used herbs are tamarind leaves, castor leaves, and drumstick leaves due to their respective medicinal activities.

2. Preparing the Potli ( Kizhi)

These herbs are selected and made potlis with other ingredients such as grated coconut, rock salt, and Lemon put in cloth wraps. A Potli is heated in an herbal oil that has a medicinal effect, giving it warmth.

3. Application

Gentle pressure is used as the warm herbal bundles are massaged rhythmically over the whole body or on certain areas determined by the unique needs of each person. While applying the Potli itself, open pores of the skin allow the warm herbs to be transferred deep into tissues thus making its way towards relaxation and balancing.

4. Post-Treatment Care

The body is usually wrapped in a blanket to keep the herbs doing their bit. A hot herbal bath makes the body feel regenerated.
