Effective Treatment of Obesity (Sthaulaya) in Ayurveda

Introduction to Obesity

In Ayurvedic terms, Stauliya is a disorder that includes the deposit of fats in the human body leading to the accumulation of stool elements due to the Visitation of Dosha and Agni.

Obesity according to Ayurveda has been correlated with Medovaha Srotas and Medodhatu (fat tissue). Obesity occurrence is the result of progressive doshas vitiations with an impaired digestive transformation leading to excess Medodhatu formation and faulty nutrition of other bodily tissues. Fat increase has two types Baddha (accumulation of fat) and Abaddha (circulation of fat).CDFA type II i.e. Bhatta Medo Vriddhi, wherein all over the body there is the excess deposition of adipose tissue which leads to obesity.

The dangers of being obese include

  • Shortened Lifespan: Being too large may shorten your lifespan because of the risks that come with higher weight.
  • Restricted Movement: Obesity can impose a curb on free movement, making the person immobile to engage in physical activities.
  • Lack of Sexual Drive: Poor sperm production and blockage in the duct system can lead to a decrease in sexual performance or impotence.
  • General weakness: Fatigue due to an imbalance in bodily tissues
  • General body odor: Accumulation of fat tissues and excessive sweating can cause a general stink perception, with the skin emanating an unpleasant odor.
  • Increased Sweating: Meda Dhatu and Kaphavada lead to increased sweating.
