Sciatica in Ayurvedic Point Of View And Treatment

Overview of Sciatica

Sciatica in Ayurveda is known as Gridhrasi and is considered to be a Vata Vyadhi, caused by the aggravation of Vata. This condition presents with lower back pain, numbness, and tightness (Kati Pradesha) which may even descend to the buttocks (gluteal regions), knees, thighs, and foot region.

Sciatica is largely due to the vitiation of Vata dosha, which rules over all movements and functions in the body. There is also the Vata-Kapha type. If any imbalance in Kapha dosha (bodily fluids and lubrication) then additional factors are also responsible for Sciatica.

Symptoms of Sciatica

  • Ruk: Gradient lumbosacral pain irradiating along the sciatic path.

  • Toda (Numbing Pain): i.e Tingling or numbness going down the legs

  • Stambha (Stiffness): Inability to bend in lumbar region, and stiffness of legs.
