Effective Ayurvedic Remedies for Indigestion

Ajeerna or indigestion is similar to a digestive disorder of the modern system. It is multifactorial and factors like wrong dietary habits, intake of cold water in excess, daytime sleep as well as psychological stress also serve to trigger indigestion. Indigestion in Ayurveda is of different types depending on the cause and manifestation.

Types of Indigestion

1- Ama-Indigestion

The concept of Ayurveda known as Ama-Indigestion, results due to the accumulation of “ama” in the digestive system. The accumulation of “Ama,” or toxic residue, usually from undigested food due to weak digestive fire (“Agni”) is a Sanskrit term. Here’s a detailed breakdown:

What is Ama?

  • Ama: Improperly digested food, created when the digestive process is disturbed. This can happen with an upset stomach due to poor digestion or heavy/incompatible foods and also excessive intake of cold/contaminated food.

  • Signs of Ama: This gummy, gooey substance is often heavy and foul-smelling. In ayurveda, it is taken as the pathology, or rather root cause of most ailments, and thought to travel within circulatory channels in the body being deposited at various tissue sites leading to imbalance.

Symptoms of Ama-Indigestion:

  • A perception of heaviness: it is that feeling, for instance after eating, that manifests in the body.
  • Nausea: Regular sensation like you will be sick.
  • Abdominal Distension: Bloating or swelling of the abdomen.
  • Fatigue: A general tiredness or lethargy and won’t be fixed with sleep;
  • Debility: Symptoms that include gas, indigestion; constipation.
  • Bad breath: This is the smelly scent that emits from your mouth because you have an ametabolism.

Causes of Ama-Indigestion:

  • Weak digestive fire (Agni): If The digestive organs have less Agni, they won’t be able to process the food well, and this may lead to the creation of Ama.
  • Wrong Diet: This can be anything heavy, oily, or the opposite of what our body needs in that season and overeating.
  • Unhealthy Eating: Skipping meals, eating late at night, or while upset.
  • Lifestyle factors: Ama can also develop due to lifestyle habits like a sedentary life, stress, and poor sleep.

2- Vidagdha-Indigestion

  • Caused by Pitta in excess, this type includes symptoms like vertigo, thirst, fainting, and burning sensations. The eructations are commonly smoky, with an acid odor.
  • Vertigo with desire for water, faintness, and dizziness from slightest motion; sense of burning in stomach or abdomen; smoky eructations.
  • Predominantly Pitta dosha.

3- Vistabdha-Indigestion

  • This variety is related to Vata dosha and features signs or symptoms like colic, flatulence, constipation, and corporeal aches.
  • Colic, flatulence, constipation, stiffness > confusion, and body ache.
  • Base Dosha: Vata dosha.

4- Rasasesa-Indigestion

  • Slow absorption: Aversion towards food – Stomach tends to feel full Precordial discomfort, and general heaviness.

  • Symptoms: Unable to desire food, uneasiness, fullness.

  • Prakushta Dosha: Usually related to sluggish digestion.

5- Dinapaki-Indigestion

  • A gastric disorder where the digestion is slow but it does cause dosha imbalance.
  • Treatment: Antacids. Symptoms: Constipation, diarrhea.
  • Underlying Dosha: None specifically.

6- Prakrta-Indigestion

  • Description: A healthy daily variant of digestion, not suggesting any pathological state.
  • Symptoms: Occasional daily cycles of digestion.

Symptoms and Signs of Indigestion

  • Vistabdha: Hardness or stiffness in the body.

  • Bhrama: Dizziness.

  • Maruta Muda: Erratic Vata.

  • Bubu (Sat): Vibanda; Constipated or the loose motion.

  • Murja: Fainting.

  • Pralapa: Talking nonsense.

  • Vamatu: Feeling of throwing up.

  • Praseka: Viscid salivation.

  • Sadinan: Pain in the limbs.
