Arthritis – Diagnosis, Symptoms and Treatment in Ayurveda

In modern science, signs and symptoms of Arthritis can be directly linked with the concept of Amavata in Ayurveda. As the name suggests, it is caused by vitiated Vata Dosha and Ama or unprocessed food essence in our bodies. The result of such unhealthy food habits with diminished digestive power due to advances in age can result in an altered state of digestion and metabolism, which serves as the leading cause for Amavata. It leads to Sandhivata (osteoarthritis), one of the major causes of geriatric morbidities and disabilities which results in chronic disability, morbidity, and a decline in the quality of life.

Arthritis Cure Through Ayurveda

Arthritis cannot be cured overnight, and there is no single approach to treating it, however, Ayurvedic arthritis treatments are a combination of herbal remedies as well as massage therapies for pain relief that can help manage its varied symptoms along with some lifestyle changes. So, it offers a unique and personalized care plan that doesn’t just treat your symptoms but improves your quality of life.

Recommended foods or Pathya

  • Mild water medicated with Panchkola (Pippali, Pippalimula, Chavya, Chitraka) Shunthi in lesser quantity at a time.
  • Take Barley, horse gram,kodo millet, and red rice (Get this milled to a fine powder) They are gentle on the stomach while providing nourishment. Barley kernels as well as other forms of barley reduce inflammation.
  • The intact antioxidant, a clear lesson of antioxidants, contains polyphenols, bioflavonoids, and catechins in green leafy vegetables and fruits carotenoids as well as vitamin C, riboflavin, etc., and Vitamin E low molecular weight compounds. These components have antioxidants, fibrinolytic and anti-inflammatory properties. Vegetables with a bitter taste such as Karela(Bitter Melon), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Parval, and Gokhru(Tribulus Terrestris) are recommended.

Foods to avoid or Apathya

Most allergens are found in dairy and other animal products, which result in far greater production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins.

  • Namely Arabi (Colocacia antiquorum) and Indian spinach(Basella rubra).

Panchakarma treatment

To enhance the weakened digestive fire and rectify metabolic waste products (Aama) formations typically followed by excretion and elimination of vitiated Doshas, intensive purification/Shodhana treatments are prescribed along with soothing/ Shamana therapies.

Shamana Treatment

Pacifying treatments are called “shamana treatment” and the use of these therapies will be recommended when patients cannot tolerate Shodhana or purifying treatments. They are also provided as follow-up maintenance treatments after purifying therapies. These therapies help to expel the accumulated Doshas, Aama, and toxins from tissues and provide strength.
